Growing up, I ate eggs close to every morning. My all-time favorite
was soft boiled eggs and toast. My mom would cut it all up and put it
into a bowl for me. The gooey yoke would soak into my freshly buttered
toast...mmm. It was just heavenly. As I got older, I realized that
every time I ate eggs, I really did not feel well. I think I must have
been in high school at the time, and I can remember having to run to the
bathroom each time an egg touched my lips. It was a terrible
problem. Around that same time I started noticing the same thing
happening when I ate corn. My stomach just could not handle it. Due
to the fact that I was also having reactions to egg/sulfur based medications, I
made the assumption that I was allergic to them, and promptly removed them from
my diet.
After close to 10 years of not eating
these foods, I decided to try them again. This time my reaction to them
was different. I didn't have to take off running to the bathroom after
eating them, so I assumed my body must have outgrown the allergy. Maybe
it was the fact that I am a busy mother of 5, or just denial, but I completely
missed other symptoms that were developing. The symptoms continued to
build and these past few months my digestive system has really been a
mess. In addition my joints ache, my head hurts, my eyes itch and hurt, I
can't remember things, I am gaining weight instead of losing it. I could
go on and on listing symptoms. I have just found myself struggling, but
wasn't putting together that it might be from my diet.
Both my mom and sister have struggled for years with many of the same
symptoms, and I would say probably worse than mine. One day while talking
to my mom about all these crazy symptoms we all have (and yes we have all been
to the doctor), my mom mentioned that she found this new diet. It is
an elimination diet, to help determine food intolerances.
My interest was piqued.
The diet is called The Virgin Diet. You can read about it in JJ Virgin's
book, The Virgin Diet: Drop 7 Foods, Lose 7 Pounds, Just 7 Days
After reading the book and watching
the amazing results it had for my mom and my sister, I decided I need to buckle
down and test it myself. My ultimate goal is to improve my overall health
and allow me to function again. So starting tomorrow, I am diving in to
my new diet. It is a serious commitment, and I am going to do my best to
stick with it.
Even though I already know that I have intolerance to two main
foods, I will be dropping all 7 of the main Food Intolerance contributors
for 21 days. They are gluten, dairy, sugar, eggs, corn, peanuts, and
soy. After the 21 days, I will slowly reintroduce each item one at a time
to test it and see if I have any symptoms or reactions to it. Once I
determine what the source of my problem is, I can permanently remove it from my
diet, and will in theory feel much better. I am just praying that this
will help correct my stomach issues.
Be sure to check out JJ Virgin.
She has some great info on weight loss, fitness, as well as this topic of food
intolerance. Almost everyone has intolerance to one of these 7 foods; you
probably just don't realize it yet!

I may have to find this book. My son definately has intolerances and not allergies. (TMI) when he eats egg it takes the skin off his butt when he poops. I couldn't even have eggs while I was nursing him. To this day if he eats cake, or anything with a little bit of eggs he butt is red and itchy after going to the bathroom. He has the same reaction to flu shot (with eggs). So it's not only a digestive thing (with him at least).
