Yesterday we watched our son graduate to Boy Scouts. It has been an exciting time in our lives, not to mention a bit emotional for poor ole' mom. I shared a little about this in my last post Momentous Mommy Milestones. I hope you will take the time to go and read it. I would love to hear about your own mommy milestones.
How has your week been going? Have you been surprising your husband this week with the little things you are doing for him? Have you been praying for him? I hope so. Let's go ahead and take a look at
Proverbs 31:13
Proverbs 31:13
"She seeketh wool and flax, And worketh willingly with her hands." - American Standard Version
Reading this verse, one may think, "but I can't sew or knit. I am no good with my hands." That is okay. This verse is about more than just being good with your hands. The first part of this verse is speaking to the Proverbs 31 woman looking for the best quality product at the best possible price. She looks for a bargain. She pays attention to sales, clips coupons, and looks for good quality in her items. She is a good steward of her families money. She respects her husband and the time and efforts it takes him to earn for his family, so she happily does what she can to guard these funds.
In the second part of this verse, she willing and joyfully works with her hands. For this time period it was normal for a woman to make her families clothing and linens. However in this day and age, this isn't the norm. I will not knock anyone that posses this skill and uses it. These are important skills, and something I feel that every person (not just girls) should learn. Since most people have not learned it, how can they still be a Proverbs 31 woman? She can still be productive in her home. She can avoid being idle and she can work to help her husband, maybe evening making a profit off of goods that she creates or services that she may be able to offer (such as teaching, babysitting, or cleaning).
For this week I want for you to start making a list of all the things around your house that you have been putting off. All of those projects that you keep telling your spouse or yourself, "I will get to that when I am less busy." Let's just be honest for a minute. There is never a time when we are going to be "less busy". Most of us always have something going on and somewhere to be. I personally have a few projects that I keep saying, "Oh, I will take care of that...when we get through the holiday...when it gets warmer...when we are done school and I can focus all my attention on this project." I am calling myself out right now. These are just excuses for me to push off what I need to get done. I am never going to have days or even hours on end that I can sit down and do these projects. It is just me procrastinating. I need to just start taking 15-30 minutes a day or even a week and start pecking away at these projects, and slowly but surely I will see them being completed.
The other item I want you to start paying attention to is how you spend money. Are you wise with your investments? If someone were to look in your dresser would they ask, "Why do you have 20 pairs of jeans?" How many do you really need? If you have plenty, don't go out and buy more. Don't buy a toy for your child every time they go to the store with you just because they asked for it. Don't purchase that new scent of candle you saw when you have others at home that you have hidden away in your closet somewhere. When you come across an item that you really want to buy, just stop and ask yourself, "Why am I buying this?" If your answer is that it is something that you or someone else in your family needs, then ask is this the best price I can get for this item? Always be sure to shop around, and don't be afraid to go to the store and ask them if they price match. Many do and will even offer a deeper discounted price just so that you will purchase from them. My husband and I saved over $1000 on our washer and dryer by talking to the store about price matching, so I know it works! Finally, think about how you are paying for things. It is okay to use credit if you can pay it off, but if you are using credit, and you can't, then you need to be thinking about getting rid of those cards! They are just a temptation to spend what you don't have! I speak from experience, credit cards can get you into a lot of trouble if you are not wise with them!
So homework for this week:
1. Continue to pray for your husband, your marriage, and your attitude.
2. Continue to do acts of love for your husband or think of things you can do for your future spouse.
3. Start your list of projects to get done around your house. You don't have to start working on them yet, but spend this week making that To Do list.
3. Start paying attention to how you are spending your money! Remember to ask those questions. Do I really need this? Is this the best price I can get? How am I going to pay for it?
I don't know about you, but I have been finding these challenges very revealing about myself. I am quickly learning my weaknesses and where I need to improve. I have already seen small changes in myself. Maybe not so much in the physical, but definitely in my outlook. Are you finding this helpful? How are these verses effecting you?
