A few weeks ago, I promised you a summer reading printable and book list. Hooray! I finally have it done! You can read about how I am planning to use these in this previous post on Preparing a Summer Reading List.
Usually I like to utilize our public library during the summer months. It gives the kids something to anticipate. There is a nice playground near our library, so we often walk over to it after picking out our books. The problem I have with creating a book list around library books, is that you never know if they will be available when you want or need them. We have quite a collection of books at home, so for our summer reading list, I picked from books we already have on hand. We will still go to the library, but this way I know I can get what is needed and the kids can pick out their favorite comics and fun books later for extra reading. They of course can include these on the log if they would like, but it is not required.
My guys are going into 3rd and 5th grade, so the books I picked are for that 3rd-5th reading level. Since my oldest doesn't enjoy reading all that much, I wanted to create a list of books that offered them a little of everything, so they could choose what they want to read without being discouraged. They do not have to read everything on the list, but I will require them to each read at least 4 books during the summer months. (I know it doesn't sound like much, but this will be a stretch with the busy summer we have planned.)
Most of these books were selected because they fit with something we have studied this year. Many being ones I had wanted us to read during the year and we just never got to. Many of these books are also in a series, but I have picked these because we have either already read others in the series, or these are what is on hand.
Be sure to read to the bottom for the *FREE PRINTABLES* I have provided an Advanced Readers Log, as well as an Early Readers Log. If you would like to adapt this file for your own purposes, please contact me first.
